George Bates Studio is the illustration studio of George Bates, specializing in illustration, hand lettering, and public art. (You’ll find his fine art here.)
“I’m interested in what an image reveals as the only thing of value about
illustration or art is what it brings one think or feel.” This has led to collaborations with Virgin Mobile, MTV, Nickelodeon, The New York Times, the LA Times, Epic Records, David Carson and many more.
George has created two permanently installed outdoor public art projects for the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority Arts & Design program. They can be seen at the B36th Street (in Rockaway, Queens) and Central Avenue (in Bushwick, Brooklyn) subway stations. He has also received a public art commission from the RTD FasTracks North Metro Line in Aurora, Colorado, permanently installed in September 2016, and is currently working with; Charlotte (NC), Phoenix (AZ), and El Paso (TX) transit system on a public art projects to be permanently installed in 2020-2021.
He is a part-time professor of illustration at Parsons School of Design and has previously taught in the COMD program at Pratt Institute. At Parsons he was asked by the department head at the time, Barbara Nessim, to create a new course offering to address problems and shortcomings in contemporary Illustration education and training. Sketchbook Warehouse is the class he’s crafted and honed over the years to address these concerns as the best jobs, opportunity, and open doors in his diverse career have come directly from his exploratory sketchbook discipline.
His work has been recognized by the Art Directors Club, American
Illustration, Society of Illustrators, Society of Publication Designers, and
the Promax BDA awards.
When he’s not creating thoughtful images he’s probably surfing, or thinking about surfing, and how it’s a metaphor for everything.
